The Health Benefits of Onions

Onions are a nutritious vegetable that originated from Egypt. They vary in size, flavor and uses. The commonly available ones in the market are white onions, red onions, and spring onions. Though their flavor and preferred uses vary, there are numerous benefits provided by onions and I will only mention three of their nutritional content:

They are a rich source of potassium (with about 200mg in one medium sized onion). Potassium is an essential mineral and electrolyte for normal cell function including the regulation of heartbeat and maintaining proper function of muscles. To this effect, onions may help prevent stroke, high blood and kidney stones when taken frequently.

These vegetables are also a rich source of sodium (around 10 mg) a mineral that regulates the total amount of water in the body, waters transmission into and out of individual cells in the body. Sodium also regulates kidney function and the secretion of certain hormones.

It is also quite interesting to note that they are also a rich source of Vitamin C, a vitamin that is lost when the vegetable is exposed to light and is very important for collagen production, a component in the structure of blood vessels, ligaments and tendons. An onion can provide approximately 12 mg from the recommended dietary allowance of 90 mg per day.
Having all this in mind, the next time you are making a meal and onions are part of it, think of its numerous health benefits and do not shy from using a lot of it although studies show that raw onions have greater benefits since cooking them degrades their nutritional content
